With our focus on sub-Saharan Africa, we have our roots in the Cape Flats region of South Africa. “The Flats”, as it’s called by locals, is an expansive, low-lying, flat area situated to the southeast of the central business district of Cape Town.
Home to roughly 4 million people, 30% of the Cape Flats and the outlying township community is infected with HIV/AIDS, 40% live in informal shacks, 50% are unemployed, and 30% do not have in-home water access.
And yet… we have hope. Despite its misgivings, the Cape Flats is home to a vibrant culture and is one of the most beautifully diverse areas in South Africa. The Flats have sports fields, community centers, schools, and local artisanship. The potential here is tremendous, and we are here to stir it up.
As we develop capacity and equip individuals, we simultaneously develop the potential of the community. This is how we overcome poverty. Together.
Hope Africa Collective is a registered non-profit in the United States, Canada, Australia, and South Africa.
