In the townships of South Africa, extreme poverty is a major issue. Quality education and employment opportunities are scarce, and hopelessness abounds as the unemployment and crime rates continue to climb. At Hope Africa Collective, our holistic development programs empower young adults with skills to help them build a better life for themselves, their families, and their communities.
Since 2018, we’ve seen over 170 incredible young adults graduate from our Hair Training program. They’ve ventured back into their communities, armed with the skills to land jobs or kickstart their own salons. Witnessing their growth and the positive impact on their communities has been nothing short of amazing.
This year, however, we faced an unexpected challenge – a decline in enrollment. Digging deeper, we discovered the reason: folks are eager to learn more than just hairdressing. Nails, lashes, and makeup are in high demand. Our graduates echoed this sentiment, expressing a wish they’d learned these additional skills so that they could offer their clients a broader range of services. In this community, clients prefer one-stop beauty shops. So, instead of sticking to the status quo, we’re embracing innovation!
In 2024, we’re transforming our Hair Salon Training into a Hair AND Beauty Academy. Future students will still dive into life skills, faith discovery, entrepreneurship, job readiness, and of course, hair. But next year, we’re adding lashes, makeup, and nails to their toolkit, making the program even more holistic. This expansion means our graduates can offer a wider array of services, paving the way for increased opportunities and income.
But here’s the deal—we can’t do it alone. To make this program a reality, we need your help. Before we launch, our on campus salon facility will need upgrades, including new equipment and supplies. Plus, our staff require additional training to ensure our students receive top-notch education. This New Year, we’re rallying our Collective to contribute to turning this dream into reality.
