A story about a hair salon

January 19, 2016

When Namhla joined our Economic Development course, she was timid, reserved, and uncertain about her future.

She wanted to make something with her life and find a way to provide for her family, but she couldn’t see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Through the program, she gained confidence, strength, and vision, and by the time graduation rolled around, she had a clear plan: She wanted to open a hair salon.

And last month she did exactly that.

Hope Africa partnered with Namhla to build the salon and we’ll be providing ongoing business mentorship. Our support strengthens her own hard work and determination to see this dream succeed.

We held a huge grand opening celebration, with food, music, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony — and Hope & Beauty Hair Salon officially opened for business.

It was an incredible day that not only marked just how far Namhla has come, but also gave great hope to others in the community. They gathered around her, praying for God’s blessing and success on her new endeavor.

It was easy to see the pride the community felt because one of their own had worked hard and was able to start her own business.

A few months in, and Namhla’s salon is busier than ever. She’s had tons of clients, and the schedule gets fuller every week. We are so happy with and for her, and thank God for the gift of seeing the fruit of our labor.

And we need you to know: It’s your fruit as well.

Your giving, prayers, and partnership make it possible for students like Namhla to be equipped to change their story — which ultimately changes the story of their entire family and community.

We thank God for Namhla and the many others whose stories have been interrupted and redirected in amazing ways.

We thank Him for His extraordinary work through ordinary people. And we thank Him for our global team of partners who make this work possible.
